FAITH and CHURCHES in BOGATA
There are several churches in Bogata, Texas. The largest church in Bogata's city limits is the First Baptist Church, located at 801 N. Main St. The church website is www.fbcbogata.org. Founded in the early 1870's, the church has a long history of serving the people of Bogata in many ways. Tragedy struck the church in November 1986 when the church was destroyed by fire. Minutes after the morning worship service was dismissed, fire consumed the entire facility. Through the Lord's strength, the church members stood firm and carried on, and the current church building was constructed and completed one year later in November of 1987. The church was determined to turn a tragedy into a victory, and that is why they began building their new church almost immediately after the fire. The new (and current) church facility was constructed at a new location at 801 North Main Street in Bogata. The current pastor is Dr. Bobby L. Tollison, who came as Sr. Pastor in April 2009. Dr. Tollison received his B.S. Degree at Texas Tech University, his Master of Divinity Degree from Southwestern Baptist Seminary, and his Doctor of Ministry Degree from New Orleans Baptist Seminary. His stated goal as pastor of First Baptist Church in Bogata is to develop a balanced church in the five biblical areas of worship, ministry, evangelism, discipleship, and fellowship. Along with providing spiritual guidance, the church sponsors ministries for all age groups, summer activites for youth and children, provides benevolent help for people in need, and facilitates counseling for couples, families, individuals, and couples preparing to get married. The church also sponsors several large events each year that brings the town and area together to enhance and build a better sense of community. One such event is the church's annual "Bogata Fest" held in the city park (Thompson Park) each year on Easter weekend. Over 850 attended in 2011, and the event is free to those who attend. It includes an Easter egg hunt for the kids, games and activites for all age groups, booths featuring face painting and crafts, bounce houses, live music featuring local talent, and lots of free food cooked on the premises. First Baptist Church is affiliated with the Red River Valley Baptist Association, the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and the national Southern Baptist Convention. First Baptist Church is open to anyone who desires to come into worship or be ministered to by the staff and / or members. Their beliefs and faith are based solely on the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The City of Bogata is served by the Rivercrest Independent School District.
